Congress has passed and sent to the White House a student loan bill (HR-2669) that allows student loan forgiveness for public sector employees under certain circumstances. However, the major provision—allowing for forgiveness of certain federal loans after a an individual has been employed in the public sector for 10 years and has made scheduled payments through that time—wouldn’t have an effect until 2017 since the start of the 10-year counting period would be October 1 of this year.
