The reimbursement rate for federal employees using their own cars on official business remains at 44.5 cents per mile at least for the present, GSA has said. GSA noted that a proposal to raise the 2007 rate to 48.5 cents per mile is in the works—which would parallel, as is standard practice, the rate the IRS uses for certain tax purposes—but that a final announcement isn’t expected until mid-February. The announcement then will set an effective date. Changes in mileage rates typically are effective for an entire calendar year, including retroactively. The announcement also will set reimbursement rates for use of other means of transportation, such as motorcycles.
