The standard mileage reimbursement rate for federal employees using their own vehicles for official travel rises from 36 to 37.5 cents per mile in 2004, an increase that was anticipated after the IRS earlier announced a similar increase in the rate for tax deductibility purposes. The federal traveler rate, set by the General Services Administration, generally tracks the IRS rate. GSA also raised the reimbursement rate for official travel via personal motorcycle from 27.5 to 28.5 cents per mile, and the rate for use of a private airplane from 95.5 to 99.5 cents per mile.
