Meanwhile, OPM likely will announce soon the results of another poll, the “human capital survey” that it conducts every two years. That survey involves many more employees and a much broader range of questions, involving their satisfaction with their pay and benefits, their views about their supervisors, and their plans for staying in or leaving the government. Also coming up is a report OPM was ordered last year by Congress to produce evaluating the total compensation package for federal employees, including the value of pay and benefits. That report was due two months ago but still could be some time in the drafting. Members of Congress who are skeptical about claims that federal employees are significantly underpaid overall might use a report placing a high value on federal benefits to argue against boosting federal raises to match those of military personnel, as has been done in most recent years. OPM also recently conducted a survey on employees’ readiness for retirement.
