New pay ranges for physicians and dentists at the VA took effect July 22, under a 2004 law that established a special pay system for them consisting of base pay, market pay and performance pay. The pay ranges, published in the May 16 Federal Register, group into consolidated pay ranges the more than 30 specialties covered by the system. Five groupings of specialties were designed to take into account private sector pay, plus recruitment and retention considerations. Two other ranges apply to chiefs of staff and to physicians and dentists in executive level administrative assignments.
