President Biden’s statement on Public Service Recognition Week, which is this week, cited the “humble yet critical work of keeping our country running” by federal employees and employees of other levels of government.

“Their work matters to people’s everyday lives: They keep neighborhoods safe and the buses running, and build futures for people in their hometowns. They are the lifeblood of our democracy, acting as brave first responders, election workers, and service members defending our country,” it says.

“Our Nation relies on our public servants every day, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” it says.

The statement cites actions during his term including: an executive order setting a minimum federal employee pay rate of $15 an hour; establishing the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment; a government-wide initiative to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the federal workforce; issuing rules barring agencies from considering an applicant’s current or past pay when determining their future salaries; policies against discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation; and expanding eligibility for student debt relief under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

He also cited rules to “guarantee that career civil servants can continue to share their expertise and keep our democracy working, my administration finalized a rule to protect the jobs of 2.2 million career civil servants — no matter who is in office” — a reference to rules to prevent a future excepted service Schedule F being created through an executive order.
