A three-year pilot program of allowing Federal Employees Group Life Insurance “option B” coverage to be portable on separation has expired and there is little prospect of it being renewed, officials say. The Office of Personnel Management has told agencies to stop issuing portability notices and the FEGLI carrier, the Metropolitan Life insurance company, will issue notices to individuals who have ported their option B that they will be able to convert to a private policy. The feature was little used and OPM last year advised Congress to allow it to end.
