The Senate has passed S-311, to address an issue related to future retirement benefits for certain CBP officers that in some cases can result in lower benefits than were intended when the special law enforcement retirement provisions were extended to those positions in 2008.

The bill would direct CBP to identify affected individuals, who would become eligible for a correction that would align their retirement benefits with the coverage they were promised. It also includes a retroactive annuity adjustment for eligible individuals who retire before the date of enactment and grants DHS authority to waive maximum entry age requirements for eligible officers.

Meanwhile, recently introduced bills in the Senate include:

* S-3194, to provide FERS retirees with the same level of inflation protection as CSRS retirees, ending a policy under which FERS adjustments are capped at 2 percent if the inflation measure is between 2 and 3 percent and they are reduced by 1 percentage point if the measure is above 3 percent.

* S-3308, to assure that all wage grade employees within the boundaries of a GS locality area receive annual raises equal to those paid under the GS locality pay system there; currently those raises can be smaller because of the way boundaries are drawn in the separate wage grade locality system.
