The DHS spending bill contains several provisions of special interest to law enforcement-related employees working there. It provides: funds for granting law enforcement officer status retirement purposes to certain Customs and Border Protection officers as previously approved in the DHS authorization bill; authorizes 3,000 more border patrol agents, bring the authorized number to nearly 18,000; prohibits DHS from cutting the number of Federal Protective Service police until FPS provides local law enforcement agencies information on the number and types of cases FPS police handle and reaches agreement with them on how these cases will be handled in the future; and generally limits Secret Service agents’ overtime to the same $35,000 annual maximum applying in other DHS entities, although that cap could be waived by the department’s secretary.
