Meanwhile the base closing commission has added to the list of facilities being considered for closing the Brunswick Naval Air Station, Maine, and the Naval Broadway Complex, California and to consider for reductions greater than the Pentagon proposed Pope Air Force Base, N.C., Galena Airport Forward Operating Location, Alaska, and the Naval Master Jet Base, Virginia. According to commission data, in the three prior rounds of base closings, 84 percent of the Pentagon’s recommendations were ultimately approved, while only 19 percent (27 of 143) of facilities considered for closing at the commission’s own initiative ended up closing.
