GSA says it is still considering a change in the mileage reimbursement rate for using personal vehicles on official business in 2008. The GSA rate typically mirrors a rate the IRS uses for tax deductibility purposes, which in 2008 is 50.5 cents per mile. GSA normally sets the federal traveler reimbursement each January although sometimes it happens later; an announcement hasn’t come this late since 1999. GSA also sets rates for use of motorcycles and privately owned airplanes, as well as rates for using a personal vehicle when a government vehicle is available for official business.
