The TSP meanwhile released results of a survey it conducted last year, showing that investors overall support increasing the available options in the program, such as a “Roth 401(k)” feature that allows money to go into the program after-tax but come out tax-free (the TSP only allows money to go in pre-tax but come out taxable). Sixty percent of respondents favored such an option, while only 11 percent didn’t favor it, and 46 percent favored a wider selection of investment options while only 19 percent opposed it; the rest were either neutral or said they didn’t know. Of the possible additional fund types mentioned in the survey, a Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities fund drew the greatest positive response; opposition to adding new funds focused on concerns about adding overhead costs and making the program more complex.
