Some employees have taken outside jobs to supplement their incomes during the shutdown, which is allowed if within general government-wide conflict of interest policies as well as individual agency policies. Presumably, upon return to work many of them will leave those jobs, but some might want to continue them. In such a case, it would be wise to check double check with agency management and ethics officials since there could be differences between how they view a stopgap outside job versus an indefinite one. Many others have applied for unemployment benefits, but due to the waiting periods and processing time involved before such benefits begin, they may not have received payments yet. Sates generally require repayment of any benefits received if the beneficiary receives retroactive pay for that period.
