A pair of Agricultural Research Service employees pioneering the use of advanced technologies to detect pathogens and develop medicines that enhance the health of bees has won the annual Service to America People’s Choice Award.
The Partnership for Public Service, which sponsors the “Sammies,” annually announces the winner in that category, chosen by public voting, ahead of announcing the winners of the other categories in the fall.
Yan Ping (Judy) Chen and Jay D. Evans—known as the Bee Team—are “making incredible progress to improve the lives of bees, developing alternative treatments for the Nosema parasite, effective solutions for the Varroa mite, a “bee detox technology” using a family of sugar compounds called cyclodextrins and more therapies with natural remedies” the announcement said.
“Although honeybees are critical for the world’s food supply, their populations have been declining over the past two decades. By applying innovative molecular and genomic technologies, Chen and Evans developed therapies to reverse colony collapse and transform bee disease diagnostic systems,” it said.
