The percentage of veterans in the federal workforce rose slightly from 2006 to 2007 from 25.4 to 25.5 percent, OPM has reported. The percentage of disabled veterans rose from 5.4 to 5.7 percent, and of those, veterans with disability ratings of 30 percent or greater rose from 2.9 to 3.1 percent. Use of several special appointing authorities for veterans was about steady overall; the biggest driver for veterans employment in the government is the preference given in competitive examination situations. In the American workforce as a whole, about 8 percent are veterans, 1 percent disabled veterans and 0.3 percent veterans with 30 percent or more disability ratings.
