OPM recently released statistics showing the age patterns of the federal workforce over the last two decades, showing that the workforce is continuing to age. Forty-three percent of employees are age 50 and older, the point at which many start thinking about retirement, and 23.9 percent are age 55 or older, the point at which many are actually eligible to retire, depending on their years of service. That compares with 29.2 percent and 14.9 percent, respectively, in 1985. The average age is now 47, versus 42.3 then.
