Can you use government travel to rack up flight / hotel rewards?

You have to use your government card, but are there best practices if you somewhat regularly travel for work? Do you just go about it normally? Do you get fewer options since you have to use the government card? Are certain airlines or hotels better to use for their rewards programs that have Federal rates?
