I am a former (20-20-20) spouse of a military member and receive a portion of his military retirement. How will that affect my retirement benefits? Is that treated as “earned income” for FERS and/or Social Security? Will my retirement and SS be reduced because of that income? Blocked by moderator

When you work under FERS or Social Security, it is an defined as an “earned” benefit…meaning you worked to earn whatever monies you will receive. These monies will not be impacted by any monies you receive based on the apportionment or survivor benefit from your former spouse. And, FYI, any monies “earned” after retirement have no impact for your FERS, only the FERS Retiree Supplement if eligible for that benefit. As to your Social Security benefit, that too would only be impacted if you are drawing your Social Security prior to your full retirement age (currently between 66-67.) Blocked by moderator
