The U.S. Treasury Department has just announced that as many as 78 million Americans will be able to file their tax returns online for free next year. Therefore, 60 percent of all taxpayers will be able to email in their returns.

E-filing, as it’s known, is thus inexpensive and can lead to faster tax refunds. Other benefits may result, according to the IRS. Electronically filed returns: have an accuracy rate of 99 percent; can be tracked online; and don’t require you to mail supporting documents such as W-2 forms or receipts for charitable contributions.
