Assisted living is an increasingly popular alternative to nursing homes. The idea is to promote the independence and dignity of seniors by providing help with bathing, dressing, getting around, medication reminders, etc., in a residential setting.
If you’re interested, for yourself or a loved one, keep these points in mind:
Don’t wait too long. The average age of someone entering an assisting living facility is nearly 80, when nursing home care might be more appropriate.
Don’t think of assisted living as a permanent housing solution. People normally live in an assisting living facility for only a few years. The three main reasons a resident leaves assisted living are severe incontinence, cognitive impairment (such as Alzheimer’s), and a need for skilled care.
Be prepared for downsizing. Most apartments in an assisting living facility have no stove, although you can expect a mini-kitchen with a small fridge, microwave and sink.
