Retirement & Financial Planning Report

Mileage limitations are included in most car leases. Many people underestimate their mileage and wind up paying sizable amounts for excess miles. If you have two cars, one leased and one that’s not leased, try to use the non-leased car as much as practical, to keep down the mileage on the leased car.

Often, you’ll pay extra if you drive over 15,000 miles a year. You might want to pay for an extra mileage allowance upfront at, say, 10 cents a mile rather than paying the excess-mileage penalty on the back end at 15 cents a mile.

While you negotiate a car lease, always ask if tax is included in a lease quote. In some cases, dealers quote a payment, without tax, to make it seem more appealing. If tax isn’t included, have it added to get a true apples-to-apples comparison.
