Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, the commander of 20th Air Force, was fired Oct. 11 for what was termed officially as "loss of trust in his leadership and judgment." Lt. Gen. James Kowalski, commander of Air Force Global Strike Command, made the decision to sack Carey based on the results of a probe by the service’s inspector general. According to the IG, Carey’s actions occurred during a temporary duty assignment and did not involve any operational-readiness or sexual-misconduct issues. Maj. Gen. Jack Weinstein has been named as Carey’s interim successor, and will assume command of the nation’s nuclear arsenal.
