Eight sailors and 17 Marines survived the Sept. 1 crash of a Marine Corps CH-53E Sea Stallion helicopter in the Gulf of Aden, the Navy reported. No one was killed. The Marines were attached to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). The crash occurred as the aircraft was attempting to land on the amphibious transport dock Mesa Verde. The Navy crew had been transporting the Marines back to the vessel after they completed shore training in Djibouti. Medical personnel on Mesa Verde treated some of the Marines and sailors for minor injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
