Some airmen could be forced to leave the service sooner than they anticipate, under a newly announced Air Force plan to roll back mandatory dates of separation. The rollback is similar to an earlier one, under which airmen who served fewer than 14 years or more than 20 years on active duty who possess an assignment eligibility code that prevents their re-enlistment must leave the service by April 30. Under the new rollback, more airmen who fall into that category must leave by June 30. The move is necessary, service officials say, in order to meet strength mandates. Airmen selected for separation or retirement under the rollback are entitled to transition assistance, medical care for themselves and their families for 180 days, and commissary and exchange privileges for two years. Other benefits may apply as well.
