Air Force researchers are studying whether the head-mounted optical displays available with Google Glass could prove useful for its special operators. “Trying to interact in the battlespace places a lot of burden on the dismounted battlefield Airmen,” said Dr. Gregory Burnett, the chief engineer of the project, which is underway at the 711th Human Performance Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. If Google Glass technology proves itself, it could provide ground-based warfighters with the same heads-up displays now available for pilots of the new F-35 Lighting II aircraft. The devices’ medical applications, for example, could allow caregivers to determine which wounded troops are in most immediate need of attention.
