A top Air Force commander says the service has resolved the service’s issues relating to the monitoring and movement of nuclear assets. Maj. Gen. Roger Burg, the commander of the 20th Air Force, attributes the change to "incredible attention to detail," including augmentation of an inspection process that had been abbreviated in the Cold War’s aftermath. What Burg calls a restoration of "nuclear surety" came in the wake of much-publicized incidents in which a B-52 bomber violated protocol by transporting nuclear missiles to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., from Minot Air Force Base, N.D., and nuclear fuses were wrongly shipped to Taiwan from Utah. The incidents led to the 2006 dismissals of Gen. T. Michael Moseley, the chief of staff, and Michael W. Wynne, the secretary of the Air Force.
