Following the example set by the Army in March, the Air Force is relaxing its policy regarding transgender airmen. No longer will they be discharged automatically. While airmen still can be discharged because of their transgender status, the director of the Air Force Review Boards Agency must approve all such separations. In such cases, a psychiatrist or Ph.D.-level psychologist must determine that a transgender service member’s status is interfering with his or her ability to meet duty requirements.
