The military’s system of delivery of supplies to forward troops in Afghanistan is not set up to ensure that all outposts receive what they need in a timely manner, according to an Oct. 7 report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM), which has responsibility for the resupply mission, should take responsibility for full oversight of the task, GAO recommended. “TRANSCOM’s oversight role does not extend all the way to final delivery to war fighters at forward-based combat outpost,” GAO stated. Rather, different entities perform that job without uniformity. While acknowledging that the Defense Department has taken some actions to improve delivery procedures, GA) advised that TRANSCOM also should document all shipments, and find reasons why some do not meet their destinations in a timely fashion.
