U.S. and United Kingdom coalition forces turned control of bases in Afghanistan’s Helmand province to Afghan forces Oct. 27. The turnover took place at the former Camp Leatherneck, which had served as the command post for Marine Expeditionary Brigade Afghanistan during much of the past 13 years. Helmand province was the site of some of the heaviest fighting between coalition forces and Taliban insurgents during the conflict.
