The Japanese government agreed to a U.S. request to construct a landfill that someday would serve as the site for the relocated Futenma Marine Corps Air Station. The new base still will be located on the island prefecture of Okinawa, but away from populous areas. Futenma now sits in Ginowan City. The populace there long has complained about aircraft noise and strains on infrastructure caused by U.S. service members. The U.S. also plans to move roughly 8,000 Marines to Guam from Okinawa. As the presence in Okinawa drops, the U.S. plans to return the unused parcels of land to the prefecture government.
