The Navy will delay the release of a draft environmental impact statement for the coastal area near the Virginia-North Carolina border, where the service hopes to construct an outlying landing field for aircraft stationed at Oceana and Norfolk Naval Air Stations, Va. Construction of the airstrip has already been tabled on several occasions since it was first conceptualized in 2000, as the Navy attempts to assuage concerns of environmental groups who are opposed to it. The latest delay was predicated by the Navy’s interest in including data related to the F-35-C Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), which likely will be based at Oceana.
