To comply with a mandate to increase the Army by 65,000 soldiers, Lt. Gen. Michael Rochelle, the Army G-1, said on Oct. 18 that the Army soon will start an active-duty version of the Guard Recruiter Assistance program. Under the program, soldiers will receive cash bonuses for finding successful recruit candidates. Rochelle said he expects the program to add as many as 1,000 recruits. It follows the Army’s new Active First program, which provides bonuses to soldiers who contract to serve on active duty for a specified period, followed by a transfer to the National Guard. He expects Active First, which already has attracted 25 soldiers, and has 100 in the pipeline, to bring in as many as 3,000 soldiers.
