The Army reacted quickly to an error that led to delivery of letters addressed to "Dear John Doe" last month to more than 7,000 families of soldiers who died in the war on terror. As soon as news of the mistake became public, Army Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Reuben Jones, said each family will receive a letter of apology from Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the chief of staff. The letters, intended to direct those families to service and assistance organizations, were meant to be addressed to each individual soldier’s family. Neither Jones nor the contractor who handled production and delivery of the errant letters would offer a reason for the mistake, other than to say it was under investigation.
