The Army has approved five new campaign streamers for use on service and unit flags, representing three campaigns in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. They will replace the current Afghanistan and Iraq streamers, which do not name specific campaigns. Units that took part in Afghanistan missions associated with Operation Enduring Freedom can display the "Liberation of Afghanistan" streamer for action that took place between Sept. 11 and Nov. 30, 2001, and the "Consolidation I" streamer, for operations between Dec. 1, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2006. Units with service in Afghanistan that began as of Oct. 1, 2006, will soon be allowed to display the "Consolidation II" streamer. Units that took part in Operation Iraqi Freedom between March 19 and May 1, 2003, can display the "Liberation of Iraq" streamer. Those who served there between May 2, 2003, and June 28, 2004, can display the "Transition of Iraq" streamer. And those who served between June 29, 2004, and Dec. 15, 2009, can display the "Iraqi Governance" streamer. Another "Nation Resolution" streamer, which covers the period that began Dec. 15, 2005, is not yet authorized for display. Army service and unit flags have displayed streamers that represent past military operations since the Battle of Lexington in 1775. Soldiers in units authorized to display the streamers receive corresponding campaign medals.
