The Army’s plan to bring 50,000 overseas troops home, mostly from Germany and South Korea, has been approved by President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, said officials. Under the relocation plan, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina and Texas will gain at least a brigade apiece. Fort Bliss, Tex., will get some 20,000 soldiers as the First Armored Division moves in from Germany and Fort Riley, Kan., and the division stands up an additional brigade. Fort Drum, N.Y., will create a third brigade, while both Fort Stewart, Ga., and Fort Campbell, Ky., both will add a brigade. Fort Hood, Tex., will gain a brigade of the First Cavalry Division, but will shift the Fourth Infantry Division’s four brigades to Fort Carson, Colo. However, an armored cavalry regiment at Fort Carson will go to Fort Hood. All moves are scheduled for completion by 2008.
