The Army plans to use a recently authorized early discharge authority beginning this month, to trim the ranks of otherwise deployable soldiers who remain in rear detachments because of insufficient time on their enlistment contracts to complete deployments with their units. These soldiers first will be offered the opportunity to reenlist or extend their tours. Those with more than three years but fewer than six years of active service who choose not to reenlist or extend will be subject to involuntary separation. They will have at least 90 days to complete transition requirements and take advantage of the Army Career and Alumni Program.
