As with the Navy and Air Force, the Army has updated its family leave policy. As with sailors, airmen, Marines and guardians, soldiers are entitled to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in the event of childbirth, adoption or acceptance of a child for long-term foster care.

The change applies to active-duty and reserve-component service members. Soldiers must apply for the leave within one year of the date of the child joining their family. Birth parents are allowed to take the parental leave after their convalescent leave ends. Non-married parents are required to prove parentage.

Soldiers can delay using the leave in the event of deployment immediately after the qualifying event. They also can use regular leave consecutively, or incrementally with parental leave. The process follows regular leave requests. Soldiers and their commanders will work together to schedule parental leave at appropriate times.
