In keeping with its vision of fielding smaller, more flexible combat units, the Army has activated its second maneuver enhancement brigade (MEB) on Sept. 18 at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. The new unit, dubbed the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, will be able to either provide support for larger units or assume the similar missions as those now performed by brigade combat teams, depending on battlefield situational needs. The first unit of its kind, the 1st MEB, was activated in September 2007.
