The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is working on development of new fire-resistant clothing that could make its way to the fleet as soon as next year. Crews on the carrier Stennis began testing prototypes in December. More testing will take place on the carrier Eisenhower and a third carrier yet to be selected. The new clothing essentially is an upgrade of existing flight-deck wear, designed to dry more quickly and be more comfortable to wear. The prototypes are made from fire-resistant synthetic fabrics, which will not have to be treated periodically with fire retardants like the present cotton uniform pants. Longer durability will translate into cost savings as well, the ONR believes.
