With the March 4 arrival of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas, took the first major step in providing a new home for the 1st Armored Division. The permanent relocation of the division’s headquarters to Bliss from Germany ultimately will bring 37,000 more soldiers to the post and its host city, El Paso, Texas, once the transition is complete in 2012. To accommodate the new arrivals, the post is undergoing $4.1 billion in construction projects. 1st AD soldiers ultimately will get new training facilities, housing, headquarters, barracks, dining facilities, fitness centers, motor pools, and maintenance facilities. Other projects will enhance areas now used by the existing air defense commands at Bliss.
