The Independent State for Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) did not receive the names it published online by hacking U.S. government computers, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said. “The information that was posted by ISIL was information taken from social Web sites and publicly available,” Carter said, during a March 23 press conference at Camp David, Md. “It wasn’t stolen from any DoD Web sites or any confidential databases,” he said, adding that Pentagon leaders take such actions seriously and are taking steps to protect the security of the 100 persons whose identities were made public. The Defense Department is reaching out to them with information about the breach.
