Cell Phones for Soldiers Update

In April 2004, 13-year-old Brittany Bergquist and her 12-year-old brother Robbie of Norwell, Mass., heard how expensive it was for soldiers to call home from Iraq. Determined to do something about it, they donated their piggy bank savings, collected snack money from schoolmates, and opened an account at the South Shore Savings Bank of Hanover. The bank contributed $500 to help them get started. Since then, Cell Phones for Soldiers has collected more than $1 million in donations. Their organization uses that money, along with funds obtained from donated used cell phones, to buy phone cards for deployed service members and those commencing deployment. Cell Phones for Soldiers has more than 4,000 drop-off sites for used cell phones. For more information, visit http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/.
