The crew of a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter helped a crewmember of a commercial cargo ship give birth to a baby girl Sept. 2. The pregnant woman was serving on the Panamanian-flagged vehicle carrier Caribbean Highway when she went into labor. The Coast Guard crew transported a civilian midwife and Coast Guard flight surgeon to the vessel at 9 a.m. The medical professionals helped the woman, a 21-year-old Filipino national, deliver the baby at about 5:20 that afternoon. They remained with the mother and child until the ship made its way into port in San Diego early the next morning. The two then were transported to a local hospital for continuing care.
