Service members and veterans would be able to learn more about institutions at which they may want to use their education benefits, under a measure approved by Congress Dec. 30. Under the measure, H.R. 4057, the Department of Veterans Affairs must develop a plan to ensure that educational institutions provide accreditation information through hyperlinks on the VA Web site, www.va.gov. Educational institutions that pay commissions or bonuses to those who secure enrollments would not be able to accept VA education benefits as compensation, as well. States will have to show that they considered military training when considering veteran applicants for commercial driver’s licenses, or certifications as emergency or non-emergency medical professionals. Housing providers for homeless veterans also now must demonstrate that their facilities conform with local codes, in regards to structural integrity and level of care. The measure also requires VA to enhance its database of veterans who may have been exposed to toxic substances through burn pits while in Iraq or Afghanistan. Rep. Mike Bilirakis, R-Fla., sponsored the measure.
