The Marine Corps has issued guidelines regarding the leave members may take to care for newborn or adopted children. Following the directives of Congress, married Marines are entitled to 10 days’ paternity leave when their spouses give birth. Marines who adopt a child are allowed up to 21 days of adoption leave as well. While the leave is mandatory, commanders have the authority to determine when it can be taken. Mission requirements are a key determinant. Deployed Marines who become parents and meet guidelines can take the leave within 90 days after returning, again depending upon mission requirements. Marines may also use the leave to accompany a spouse to a medical treatment facility, should they live in an area where such services are not readily available. Unmarried Marines may also be entitled to the leave, as long as they have sole custody of the baby. For more details, see MARADMIN 0076/09 on the Marine Corps Web site, www.marines.mil.
