Once Congress gives its blessing, the Defense Department will move forward in establishing U.S. Cyber Command, officials told members of the House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee March 16. Once Cybercom is up and running, its personnel will be responsible for protecting the security of the armed forces’ more than 15,000 computer networks in the continental U.S. and abroad. It will operate under the umbrella of U.S. Strategic Command. In anticipation of Cybercom’s arrival, the four armed services have consolidated their computer operations under unified commands, and DoD has begun training and equipping key personnel to perform necessary missions.
