The Defense Health Agency is urging beneficiaries to be wary of a website that purports to be a portal into the Military Health System. Stars and Stripes reported that users who mistakenly enter the it could compromise their personal information and allow the site’s creators to gain access to their medical records.
The agency made the announcement on its Facebook page.
“If you find any websites that reference the MHS GENESIS patient portal or other information about MHS GENESIS that are not part of the .mil domain, those are not official government websites or affiliated with the Department of Defense or Military Health System,” the Facebook post advised. “Any web address ending in anything other than .mil will not take you to the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal and may not be secure.”
The Stars and Stripes story noted that U.S. military hospitals in Japan issued warnings on Facebook about the sites, which patients could mistakenly use when trying to book appointments.
Even though the bogus site does include links to real military portals which could suggest that it is legitimate, the Defense Health Agency and Stars and Stripes both noted that it does not show any official branding. At the bottom of each web page, the website in question does state, “This site is not affiliated with the Military Health System nor TRICARE. All content is purely for the user’s information only.”
The real website address is https://patientportal.mhsgenesis.health.mil.
