Sailors deployed to or being deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan or the Horn of Africa now have more options for taking the Navy advancement exams. NAVADMIN 139/07 of May 30 allows commanding officers to authorize administering the exam if they find the area is conducive for testing and the sailors have had ample time to prepare. Eligible sailors who are within 60 days of deploying to one of these locations can also request an early exam. Deployed sailors who are eligible, but unable to take the exam, will take the next regularly scheduled exam upon their return. The exams will be scored against the missed cycle for which they were eligible. First class petty officers who were previously selection-board eligible and meet the requirements of the new message are waived from the advancement examination for chief.
