No sailors were injured during a July 18 mishap in which a missile exploded shortly after being launched from the destroyer The Sullivans. The ship did sustain some damage from the blast, however, Navy Sea Systems Command said in a statement to U.S. Naval Institute News. The Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) malfunctioned and exploded shortly after it was fired from The Sullivans that morning, according to NAVSEA. The extent of the damage has yet to be determined. The ship was able to return to its homeport, Norfolk Naval Station, Va., under its own power.
