The Defense Department will release some of the photographs that surfaced during internal investigations into abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison, as well as other cases in Iraq and Afghanistan. The decision arises from an agreement among DoD, the Justice Department, and the American Civil Liberties Union, in the wake of an ACLU request in 2004 under the Freedom of Information Act. The ACLU sued the Defense Department for the photos’ release. Under the agreement, DoD will make public 21 pictures ordered for release by a federal judge in New York, as well as another 23 images related to the lawsuit, by May 28.
